Research & Ethical Review

The Ethical Review committee (ERC) at NIID provides ethical clearance for studies that involve patients or patients' data at NIID. It’s mandatory that the studies involving patients or patient data be reviewed by the NIID ERC. This is established to empower researchers and ensure ethical standards. Alms Giving Ceremony Commemorates NIID Centenary Celebrations

As part of the 100th Anniversary Celebrations of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), an Alms Giving Ceremony was held on 6 July 2026 at the NIID premises, offering alms to 100 Venerable members of the Maha Sangha in commemoration of the institution’s centenary. The ceremony was made possible through the generous contributions and active participation of staff from all categories, reflecting the unity, compassion, and collective spirit that have been the foundation of NIID’s service over the past century.

The Alms Giving Ceremony served as a profound expression of gratitude for the blessings received throughout NIID’s 100-year journey and an opportunity to seek continued guidance and protection for the institution, its staff, patients, and the nation. By bringing together the entire NIID family in a shared act of generosity and merit, the event symbolized the institution’s enduring values of compassion, service, and unity, while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the health of the people of Sri Lanka for generations to come.

Pirith Chanting Ceremony Inaugurates NIID Centenary Celebrations

The National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID) commenced its 100th Anniversary Celebrations with a solemn Pirith Chanting Ceremony held on 5 July 2026. The ceremony brought together the hospital administration, healthcare staff, and invited guests to invoke blessings for the institution, its staff, patients, and the nation while expressing gratitude for a century of dedicated service in infectious disease prevention and patient care.
The Pirith Chanting Ceremony marked the official beginning of the year-long centenary commemorative programme, celebrating NIID’s remarkable 100-year journey and reaffirming its commitment to excellence in clinical care, public health, research, and education. NIID extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to making this meaningful event a success.

Blood Donation Camp

In celebration of the Centenary of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), a Blood Donation Camp was successfully organized on 14th May 2026 with the enthusiastic participation of NIID staff members and public donors. Demonstrating compassion, unity, and commitment to saving lives, donors generously contributed blood to support the wellbeing and treatment of patients in need.
This meaningful initiative reflected the enduring spirit of care and service that has been the foundation of NIID throughout its 100-year journey. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all donors for their invaluable contribution and sincere gratitude to the National Blood Transfusion Service for their continuous support and collaboration in making this event a great success.

The Centenary Celebration of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases

As part of the Centenary Celebration of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, an Educational Exhibition on Infectious Diseases and the History of NIID was successfully held on 26th and 27th March 2026 at the NIID Clinic Complex. The exhibition provided valuable educational experiences on infectious diseases, prevention methods, public health practices, and the remarkable history and achievements of NIID over the past 100 years.

 

Healthcare staff, school students, and members of the public participated enthusiastically and gathered important knowledge through informative displays, awareness sessions, and interactive exhibits. The event was organized with the objective of enhancing public awareness and strengthening community understanding of infectious disease prevention and control while commemorating the 100-year journey of NIID.

“Suwa Rasa Mihira”

“Suwa Rasa Mihira” – A Platform to Celebrate Talent and Well-Being

Suwa Rasa Mihira is a quarterly programme organized to provide a creative and inclusive platform for staff members to showcase their talents, including singing, dancing, drama, handicrafts, and other artistic skills.

Designed as an evening of relaxation and positive engagement, the programme offers staff a refreshing break from the routine and demanding nature of hospital duties, promoting mental well-being, teamwork, and work–life balance.

This initiative is organized by the Quality Management Unit of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), with enthusiastic participation from all categories of staff, reflecting the unity, diversity, and vibrant spirit of the NIID hospital community

A Blessed and Promising Start to 2026

The hospital community came together on 1st January 2026 to mark the beginning of the New Year with the traditional Public Service Oath and a Pirith Chanting ceremony, invoking spiritual blessings for the year ahead.

On this occasion, excellence and dedication were also recognized. Awards were presented to the winners of the Audit Competition and Patient Safety Projects, acknowledging their outstanding contributions to improving quality, safety, and standards of care within the institution.

The commitment and professionalism demonstrated by our staff continue to strengthen our mission of delivering safe, high-quality healthcare. As we step into 2026, we look forward to working together towards a healthier nation
